City Set to Assume Ownership of Dico Site, Open Door to Potential Development
The City of Des Moines is on track to take ownership of the former Dico property, a critical step toward revitalizing a site plagued by environmental issues. A vote by the City Council on September 14 will determine whether to adopt a consent decree that facilitates the transfer of ownership and cleanup efforts. This agreement, involving the U. S. Department of Justice, the EPA, and Dico-related companies, aims to resolve over two decades of litigation and environmental disputes.
Mayor Frank Cownie emphasized the importance of this agreement for the city's future, highlighting its potential to enhance the southern edge of downtown Des Moines. The site has been listed as a Superfund location since 1983 due to significant chemical and metal contamination. EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Gulliford reinforced the agreement's role in protecting local drinking water and promoting community restoration. Titan Tire Corporation's leadership expressed their commitment to seeing the site returned to productive use, further underscoring the collaborative efforts of local, state, and federal officials. The upcoming City Council meeting will provide an opportunity for public engagement via Zoom, ensuring transparency in the decision-making process.
