East Douglas Avenue Reconstruction Project Update

Des Moines, IALocal News

The East Douglas Avenue Reconstruction Project is poised to significantly upgrade the infrastructure in the Sheridan Gardens and Brook Run Neighborhoods, with construction expected to begin shortly. The initial phase involves essential water main replacements, which will transition westward along East Douglas Avenue. Following this, a major roadway reconstruction will commence, aimed at removing existing pavement and constructing new Portland Cement Concrete sections complete with curbs, gutters, and storm sewers. Scheduled for bidding in February and March 2021, the project will also include shared-use trails and stormwater management systems designed to alleviate flood risks. The anticipated construction timeline is mid- to late spring 2021, with completion expected by fall 2022.

Detours will be implemented to ensure minimal disruption to local traffic, and access to driveways will be maintained as much as feasible. By integrating stormwater detention basins, the project will enhance flood risk management, providing approximately one million cubic feet of storage to reduce runoff. Ultimately, this initiative reflects a commitment to improving community infrastructure and safety while promoting sustainable development practices.
