Notice of Forensic Report on Financial Misconduct at Des Moines Public Library

The Des Moines Public Library has released a press statement regarding a forensic investigation that uncovered significant financial misconduct by the late Library Office Manager, Bekki Kirkland. The investigation, carried out by RSM US LLP, identified unauthorized purchases amounting to $28,440. 83, primarily involving prepaid Visa gift cards. These irregularities came to light following Kirkland's death in April 2020 when library staff noticed inadequate documentation for various transactions on the library's credit card. An internal investigation initiated by the library, in collaboration with the City of Des Moines, revealed additional suspicious transactions.

In response to the findings, DMPL has updated its financial policies to strengthen oversight on credit card and vendor payment procedures. Library Director Sue Woody highlighted the library's commitment to responsible financial management and expressed appreciation for the investigative support received. The complete forensic report is accessible to the public upon request. The library aims to ensure enhanced protection against similar issues in the future.
