Des Moines Earns Recognition From EPA

Des Moines, IALocal News

Des Moines, Iowa, has earned a top-three ranking from the EPA for having the most ENERGY STAR-certified buildings among mid-size cities, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. The city currently has 48 certified buildings encompassing over 5. 6 million square feet, which collectively reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 18,000 metric tons and saved over $2. 2 million in energy costs for building owners. Mayor Frank Cownie highlighted this achievement as a testament to the city's efforts toward its ambitious goal of achieving 100% carbon-free electricity by 2035.

A significant factor in this success is the Energy and Water Benchmarking Program, which mandates large building owners to annually report their energy and water usage to the city. Sustainability Program Manager Jeremy Caron noted that this initiative helps property owners identify savings opportunities and pursue ENERGY STAR certification, enhancing their marketability. Furthermore, Des Moines maintains six LEED-certified buildings, including several with platinum ratings, ensuring they adhere to rigorous sustainable design standards. These certifications not only promote energy efficiency but also contribute to healthier living environments. The city’s ongoing commitment to sustainability positions it as a leader in environmental stewardship and energy efficiency.
