Scott Avenue Bridge Reopen For Traffic

Des Moines, IALocal News

The Scott Avenue Bridge in Des Moines, Iowa, has officially reopened to traffic after undergoing extensive rehabilitation that began in April 2020. This renovation is part of the $22 million Bridges to Opportunity project, which focuses on enhancing four vital bridges that span the rivers in downtown Des Moines. The rehabilitation work included a variety of critical updates, such as a concrete deck overlay, structural concrete repairs, and the installation of new ornamental railings and handrails. Additionally, the project addressed noise reduction by grooving the bridge deck to improve the interface between vehicle tires and the pavement. The Walnut Street Bridge is slated to be the next focus of improvement, with a full replacement planned to start in 2022 and expected to be completed by 2024.

This infrastructure investment underscores the City of Des Moines' commitment to maintaining and improving its transportation systems for the benefit of over 217,000 residents.
