DMPD Joins 30x30 Initiative to Advance Female Officers
The Des Moines Police Department (DMPD) has joined the national 30x30 Initiative, which seeks to increase the representation of women in law enforcement recruit classes to 30% by 2030. Currently, women account for only 13% of sworn officers within the DMPD, highlighting a significant gender disparity in the department. The initiative outlines actionable steps for policing agencies to promote women's status in law enforcement, including eliminating gender bias in policies and fostering equitable hiring practices. In response, the DMPD has committed to implementing innovative recruiting strategies and establishing a female-to-female mentoring program aimed at supporting female officers. Chief Dana Wingert remarked, “When women succeed, we all succeed,” emphasizing the initiative's potential to transform the department.
This commitment not only aims to bridge the gender gap but also to create a culture that is inclusive and respectful of women in law enforcement. The DMPD's participation in the 30x30 Initiative marks a critical step towards enhancing diversity and representation within the force.
