2nd Avenue Bridge Closed Two to Four Weeks

Des Moines, IALocal News

On April 15, 2022, the City of Des Moines announced a complete closure of the 2nd Avenue and Birdland Drive Bridges, following a construction mishap that compromised the bridge's structural integrity. City Engineer Steve Naber acknowledged the significant inconvenience this poses to local travelers and assured that structural engineers are actively working to reinforce the east half of the bridge. The city estimates that one lane of traffic in each direction could be reopened within two to four weeks, depending on the progress of the repairs. The closure occurred when the contractor accidentally removed essential reinforcement while demolishing the west half of the bridge. During this period, traffic will be diverted using Euclid Avenue, East 14th Street, and University Avenue, which may lead to delays for commuters.

This incident underscores the critical need for ongoing infrastructure maintenance and safety assessments in urban environments. The city remains committed to restoring safe travel routes for its residents as promptly as possible. For updates, residents are encouraged to contact Al Setka, Chief Communications Officer for the City Manager’s Office.
