City Creating Condition Report of Neighborhoods

Des Moines, IALocal News

The City of Des Moines is actively conducting a Property Condition Survey to assess the structural health of its neighborhoods, surveying over 96,000 houses across more than 50 neighborhoods. This initiative, spearheaded by trained outreach coordinators, aims to provide a comprehensive citywide condition report ranked on a scale of 1-5. The data gathered will be crucial for city planning, as it will identify specific repairs needed for homes and highlight areas requiring additional assistance. According to SuAnn Donovan, deputy director of Neighborhood Services, the survey only takes a few minutes per house, allowing for efficient data collection. As the survey progresses, insights will emerge about which neighborhoods are thriving and which require attention.

The project began in spring 2022 and is about one-third complete, with an expected wrap-up later this year. This initiative not only aims to improve housing conditions but also enhances public safety and quality of life for Des Moines residents. By establishing a clear baseline of information, the city can better direct resources and efforts toward neighborhood revitalization.
