5th Avenue Traffic Downtown Will Be Converted to Two-Way This Weekend

Des Moines, IALocal News

The City of Des Moines is set to transform 5th Avenue from a one-way to a two-way street starting April 27, 2023, as part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility and safety. This conversion will affect three blocks of 5th Avenue from Mulberry Street to Grand Avenue and two blocks of Grand Avenue from 3rd to 5th Street. The project is aligned with the Connect Downtown transportation master plan, which aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly and cyclist-friendly environment. Enhancements include the addition of dedicated bike lanes and improvements to sidewalks and bus stops, facilitating better access for all users. City Engineer Steve Naber stated that the focus is on making streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and motorists.

The conversion is scheduled for completion by April 30, with anticipated traffic disruptions on Friday and Saturday due to resurfacing and pavement marking activities. This initiative not only addresses immediate traffic concerns but also contributes to the long-term vision of a vibrant and walkable downtown. Des Moines continues to lead in sustainable urban development, enhancing quality of life for its residents.
