Seasonal Mosquito Control Begins in the City

Des Moines, IALocal News

The City of Des Moines has launched its annual mosquito control initiative to tackle growing mosquito populations and mitigate the risk of West Nile Virus for its residents. Partnering with Clarke, a seasoned mosquito control company based in St. Charles, Illinois, the city will employ comprehensive strategies including mapping breeding sites, population surveillance, and targeted treatments. The mosquito control efforts will begin with helicopter larvicide treatments during the week of May 21, followed by city-wide adult mosquito control treatments starting on May 21 at night, when mosquito activity peaks. These treatments utilize ultra-low volume application systems that minimize environmental impact while effectively controlling mosquito populations.

Residents are encouraged to actively participate by eliminating standing water in their yards, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. For added convenience, the city has made it easy for residents to report nuisance levels and receive notifications about treatment schedules through Clarke's online hotline. Importantly, residents have the option to opt out of treatments, aligning with community preferences. This proactive approach aims not only to enhance public health but also to ensure a comfortable living environment for all Des Moines residents.
