16 Recruits Graduate from Des Moines Police Academy
Sixteen recruits proudly graduated from the Des Moines Police Academy on November 22, 2024, marking a significant moment for the Des Moines Police Department as they welcome their newest officers. This graduation ceremony, the 84th in the academy's history, is the first class to graduate under Police Chief Michael McTaggart, who noted that the day represents the beginning of a lifelong journey of service to the community. The recruits are celebrated for their diversity, being among the most ethnically and racially varied classes ever, with members who collectively speak at least six languages. Lieutenant Rodrigo Santizo highlighted the importance of this class in ensuring that the police department mirrors the community it serves, which is continually evolving. After their graduation, the officers will embark on a field training program, which is crucial during their probationary period.
The ceremony underscores the department's commitment to inclusivity and community representation. This initiative aims to foster trust and better service between law enforcement and residents. The Des Moines Police Academy continues to play a vital role in shaping a police force that reflects the city's diverse population.
