The City of Des Moines, Iowa, will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20, 2025, with all administrative buildings closed while waste collection services remain unaffected. The Des Moines Public Library will honor Dr. King's legacy with a special celebration at the Forest Avenue Library, featuring a keynote address from Deidre DeJear, the President and CEO of Oakridge Neighborhood. The Parks and Recreation Department is also hosting the annual MLK Jr.

Donate & Skate event at Brenton Skating Plaza, allowing community members to skate for free in exchange for donations of non-perishable food items or warm clothing, which will benefit Central Iowa Shelter & Services. However, due to severe cold weather predictions, the skating event has been rescheduled to February 10, 2025. Central Library will act as a warming center on January 20, operating from 9 a. m. to 5 p.

m. under the Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan. These initiatives showcase the city's dedication to honoring Dr. King's legacy of service and community engagement. Residents are encouraged to participate in these events to foster unity and support those in need.
