WSDOT to deploy speed enforcement cameras in work zones

Deming, WALocal News

Beginning in early 2025, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will implement a Work Zone Speed Camera Program aimed at reducing speeding in construction zones. This initiative, born from legislation passed in 2023, will see speed cameras mounted on trailers positioned in active work zones throughout the state. Drivers will be notified of the speed limit and the camera enforcement through posted signs before entering these areas. When a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the system will capture images of the vehicle and its license plate, along with pertinent details such as speed and location. The Washington State Patrol will meticulously review this data, and if a violation is confirmed, a notice of infraction will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner within 30 days.

Notably, the first infraction will not carry a fine, but subsequent violations will result in a $248 penalty. This program is anticipated to significantly enhance safety for both workers and drivers in Washington's active work zones. Stakeholders believe that the initiative will lead to a decrease in accidents and improve compliance with speed regulations.
