On January 1, 2025, Whatcom County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers worked tirelessly for 14 hours to rescue a lost backcountry skier who had become separated from his partner. This emergency response began under perilous conditions on Mount Baker, showcasing the skills and commitment of local rescue teams. The collaboration involved the Mount Baker Ski Patrol and U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine support, illustrating a united front in search and rescue efforts.

As darkness fell, the CBP air-dropped essential supplies, including food, shelter, and a radio, to the skier, which proved vital for his survival until morning. The Bellingham Mountain Rescue team then bravely navigated the hazardous terrain, which posed risks of avalanches and open creeks, to successfully locate and rescue the skier.
