Tomorrow Speed limit changes on I-5 in Skagit County

Deming, WALocal News

Effective January 15, 2025, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will permanently alter the speed limits along a section of I-5 in Skagit County, addressing growing safety concerns. The speed limit for southbound traffic will decrease from 70mph to 60mph, while northbound traffic will see a shift from 60mph to 70mph, particularly near the Cook Road interchange. Over the past decade, traffic has surged by about 8,000 vehicles per day in this area, prompting the need for these changes. The decision is backed by data indicating that reduced speeds will aid drivers in navigating back-to-back curves and high volume entry and exit points near the SR 20 interchange. On January 15, lane closures will occur from 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM to allow crews to install the new speed limit signs.

This initiative underscores WSDOT's proactive approach to enhancing roadway safety and managing increased traffic. Local residents and commuters should be aware of these changes and adjust their travel plans accordingly. The adjustment aims not only to improve safety but also to facilitate smoother traffic flow in the busy corridor.
