What steps Howard Co. is taking to improve its school bus management plan

Columbia, MDLocal News

Howard County, Maryland's public school system is implementing crucial changes to its school bus management plan in an effort to rectify past transportation issues that plagued the start of the 2023-2024 school year. In a letter to the community, Superintendent William J. Barnes detailed the steps being taken to ensure timely arrivals at school and address elevated chronic absenteeism rates. Numerous parents had expressed frustration over students waiting for hours for bus pickups, prompting a response from the school system. The new project management plan will allow transportation contractors to thoroughly review bus routes and conduct dry-runs prior to the school year kickoff on August 26.

As part of this effort, 11 HCPSS elementary and middle schools will have adjusted start times to alleviate traffic congestion and respond to community concerns. Barnes also highlighted improvements to the bus tracking system, ensuring that route numbers align with those displayed on the buses for better clarity. These changes come after an apology issued by HCPSS in August 2023, acknowledging that an independent contractor lacked sufficient drivers to cover many routes. The school system is committed to learning from past mistakes and providing reliable transportation for its students.
