‘The scope of this investigation is enormous’: 15,000 stolen tools recovered in Howard Co. - WTOP News
In a remarkable operation, Howard County police have recovered over 15,000 pieces of stolen construction equipment valued between $3 million and $5 million, marking one of the largest theft cases in the area. The investigation, which began in January, was sparked by a victim from Virginia who had equipment stolen with a tracking device. This led officers to a storage unit in Elkridge and ultimately to search warrants at 12 locations, primarily within Howard County. Police Chief Gregory Der highlighted the expansive scope of the investigation, noting that more than 80 victims have already been identified, with many more expected to come forward. The stolen tools were taken from various sources, including retail stores, vehicles, and construction sites, and were found in storage units.
Victims have reported significant losses, not just in terms of the equipment but also in lost work opportunities. To assist those affected, police have created an online form for victims to report their stolen tools, ensuring they receive support in the recovery process. The ongoing investigation underscores the critical issue of construction equipment theft in the region.
