‘I put a GPS on it’: Virginia man tracks down stolen construction tools, initiating ‘enormous’ investigation - WTOP News
A contractor from Sterling, Virginia, took proactive measures to protect his construction tools, which ultimately led to the recovery of over $3 million worth of stolen equipment. The Howard County Police initiated an investigation in January after the contractor reported the theft of his tools, equipped with a GPS tracking device. Upon realizing his equipment was gone, he tracked the tools' movements, which led him to an Elkridge storage unit filled with stolen items. Police executed search warrants on 12 locations, recovering over 15,000 pieces of construction equipment linked to the thefts. Although no charges have been filed yet, authorities have identified at least 80 victims and believe the total number could reach into the hundreds or thousands.
The contractor, who chose to remain anonymous for safety reasons, shared his frustrations about the theft but expressed relief that his GPS system allowed him to assist in the investigation. He noted the financial burden of replacing his tools, which cost around $5,000, but remained hopeful that the police would locate the individuals responsible for the thefts. This case highlights the growing issue of construction equipment theft and the innovative ways victims can fight back.
