Three Open Space Projects Receive Impact Fee Funding
The City of Chicago has announced the approval of three open space projects, collectively receiving over $1 million in funding from the Department of Planning and Development’s Open Space Impact Fee (OSIF) program. The largest of these projects, Larrabee Gateway Plaza, will receive $844,000, facilitating improvements that enhance passive recreation and establish a connection to the adjacent Park No. 598. Additionally, Gray Elementary School will benefit from $287,751 to construct a 6,300-square-foot play area, with further funding sourced from Chicago Public Schools and the local 30th Ward office. In West Ridge, Stone Scholastic Academy is set to receive $137,367 for the development of a 2,500-square-foot nature play area, aided by contributions from Friends of Stone Academy.
The funding allocated through the OSIF program is derived from fees collected from residential construction projects, aimed at offsetting the impact of new residents on local parks and recreational resources. By investing in these projects, the city underscores its dedication to sustainable growth and community well-being. The initiative not only enhances recreational spaces but also fosters a sense of community among residents. This funding will help ensure that Chicago's neighborhoods remain vibrant and accessible for all citizens.
