Revised Sign Guidelines Proposed to Support Downtown Business Vitality
The City of Chicago is taking action to bolster downtown business vitality by proposing revisions to sign regulations along Michigan Avenue and State Street/Wabash Avenue. Introduced by Mayor Brandon Johnson, these changes aim to provide local businesses with greater flexibility in advertising while preserving the unique character of these historic shopping corridors. The proposed amendments will allow larger signs and introduce previously prohibited sign types, such as banner signs and illuminated letters. For the Michigan Avenue Special Sign District, the maximum sign area would increase, along with the size of window signs and awning lettering. Similarly, the State Street/Wabash Avenue Special Sign District will see relaxed restrictions on projecting signs and window signage.
Commissioner Ciere Boatright noted that these adjustments are essential for retailers facing challenges in the brick-and-mortar landscape. By modernizing the sign guidelines, the city aims to help businesses attract more customers and ultimately increase sales. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to supporting local commerce while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of its renowned shopping destinations.
