Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Announce The Good Food Fund Grant Awardees
Mayor Brandon Johnson announced the inaugural recipients of the Good Food Fund grants, a program intended to bolster small food businesses in Chicago's underserved communities. This initiative, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, awarded 41 local food businesses with grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. The Good Food Fund aims to improve access to culturally relevant and healthy food options while promoting local economic growth through increased business ownership and job creation in the food sector. Developed in conjunction with the Food Equity Council and Allies for Community Business, the grant selection process focused on addressing food insecurity in neighborhoods with inequitable food access. The application process for the second round of grants will commence on August 15, 2024, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to food equity.
Mayor Johnson remarked on the importance of ensuring that all Chicagoans have access to fresh, local food, praising the dedication of the grant recipients. The program also encompasses initiatives such as food coaching and access to low-interest loans to further support the local food ecosystem. This announcement reflects a broader effort to create resilient communities through improved food access and economic opportunity.
