Volunteers help keep Chelmsford's rivers clean | City Life
On June 8, 2024, Chelmsford witnessed an impressive turnout of over 100 volunteers who came together to clean the city's rivers, particularly focusing on the Chelmer and Can. Organized by Love Your Chelmsford, the event aimed to remove litter from the waterways while promoting community involvement and environmental awareness. Participants included members of the Chelmsford Canoe Club, SUPsect Paddleboarders, and Chelmsford Scuba Diving Club, who worked diligently to pull various items from the riverbed. The cleanup yielded a surprising array of trash, including shopping trolleys, a clothes dryer, and even a car engine, underscoring the pressing need for environmental stewardship. Notably, the local group Chelmsford Litter Wombles also participated, showcasing a united community effort toward a cleaner environment.
The city council expressed heartfelt gratitude for the volunteers' efforts, emphasizing the significant difference their work makes in maintaining the city's cleanliness throughout the year. Volunteers were treated to refreshments from BB’s Coffee and Muffin Cafe as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work. This event serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility in preserving local ecosystems and fostering community spirit.
