On February 9, 2025, a catastrophic collision on State Route 28 near Rock Island resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two teenagers and a bus driver. The incident unfolded when a 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by a 17-year-old from East Wenatchee, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a full-size coach bus traveling eastbound. Following the initial impact, a third vehicle was also struck, further complicating the scene. Eight passengers from the bus were transported to Confluence Health Hospital for various injuries, with one passenger later passing away due to the severity of their injuries. The Washington State Patrol is actively investigating this tragic incident, with the District 6 Criminal Investigation Unit and the Major Accident Investigation Team leading the inquiry.
