The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is set to initiate spring clearing operations on SR 20 North Cascades Highway on March 17, 2025, beginning at Silver Star (milepost 171). Despite a forecast of light snow over the weekend, the schedule for clearing will remain unaffected. Snowmobilers are reminded to relocate any parked vehicles from behind the closure point to ensure a smooth start to the clearing process. The work zone will be active Monday through Thursday from 6 a. m.

to 4 p. m. , and the public is advised to avoid the area for safety reasons. The clearing process is expected to take approximately six weeks, during which WSDOT will provide weekly updates. Travelers can stay informed via the real-time travel map and follow the progress through WSDOT's Flickr updates.

With the highway closed and unmaintained between milepost 134 and 171, users are encouraged to check conditions with the Northwest Avalanche Center if they plan to visit the backcountry. This operation is crucial for restoring access to one of the region's most scenic routes.
