The Save the Redwoods League, a prominent environmental organization based in San Francisco, announced on September 12, 2024, the acquisition of 1,624 acres of redwood and coastal prairie land adjacent to Fort Ross State Historic Park for $15 million. This significant purchase expands the protected area around Fort Ross by 50%, ensuring that the picturesque landscapes remain untouched by development. The property features breathtaking redwood groves, coastal meadows, and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, which Sam Hodder, the League's president, described as "the very best of California. " The League has a storied history in conservation, having safeguarded over 220,000 acres of redwood and sequoia forests since its inception in 1918. Previous acquisitions by the League have successfully expanded several state and national parks, including Fort Ross itself.

Future plans include discussions with state parks officials to facilitate public access and recreational opportunities in the area. Despite budget constraints under the administrations of former Governors Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom, the League's efforts continue to focus on preserving California's natural landscapes for generations to come. This acquisition marks a vital step in maintaining the ecological integrity and historical significance of the North Bay coastline.
