The latest election results for Burien's Initiative 1 indicate a growing support base, with 56. 81% of voters (4,377 votes) backing the measure as of February 14, 2025. This represents a notable increase from earlier tallies, signaling a shift in voter sentiment towards the proposed minimum wage increase. Voter turnout has also climbed to 25. 58%, as 7,712 ballots have been processed out of 30,146 registered voters in Burien.
The initiative seeks to align the city's minimum wage with Tukwila’s rate of $21. 10 per hour and includes phased increases for smaller businesses. Notably, the measure also stipulates that employers must provide existing part-time employees with additional work hours before bringing in new staff. This reflects an effort to support the local workforce and address employment practices. As the election progresses, King County Elections will continue to process ballots, with final results expected to be certified by February 24.
