Mayor Wu and BPHC Release Health Equity Report, Seek Partners to Close Life Expectancy Gap Across Neighborhoods
Mayor Michelle Wu, alongside the Boston Public Health Commission, has launched the "Live Long and Well" report, a strategic initiative focused on narrowing the life expectancy gap among Boston's residents. This report underscores the significant impact of social, economic, and environmental factors on health outcomes, particularly for marginalized communities. With a commitment of $10 million from the Atrius Health Equity Foundation, the city is inviting community partners to propose projects aimed at improving health and economic security in neighborhoods like Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan. The funding opportunity, which includes up to $5 million for community-led coalitions, aims to address key health issues such as cardiometabolic diseases, which disproportionately affect Black residents. Proposals are expected by March 12, 2025, with awardees announced in June.
Health officials emphasize the urgent need for collaborative efforts to tackle these longstanding disparities and ensure that all Bostonians have access to the resources necessary for a healthy life. Mayor Wu expressed gratitude to community partners for their involvement in this essential work, reinforcing the city's dedication to fostering health equity. This initiative is a vital step towards creating a healthier, more equitable future for all residents of Boston.
