Mapping the Historic Bennington Street Cemetery

Boston, MALocal News

The Historic Burying Grounds Initiative recently highlighted their efforts to map and research Bennington Street Cemetery, an endeavor crucial for preserving local history. The cemetery, initially surveyed in the 1980s, did not have a comprehensive map, necessitating a new project to document its gravestones accurately. Using an aerial photograph as the foundational layer, the team, including volunteer Emma Jansen, identified around 450 gravestones, employing a systematic approach based on earlier surveys. The mapping process involved dividing the cemetery into quadrants and meticulously documenting each stone’s location. Various challenges, such as the deterioration of gravestones due to the New England climate, complicate this task, yet the initiative remains committed to overcoming these obstacles.

By incorporating historical data and community involvement, the project aims to create a detailed and accessible record of the cemetery's history. This effort not only preserves the legacy of those interred but also serves as a resource for historians and the public alike. Ultimately, the initiative underscores the importance of safeguarding local heritage for future generations.
