Planning Department Advances First Squares Streets Plan in Roslindale Square

Boston, MALocal News

Boston's Planning Department has officially adopted the Roslindale Square Squares + Streets Small Area Plan, the first of its kind since the citywide planning initiative launched last year. This plan aims to diversify housing options, creating 226 new residential units, including 91 income-restricted units, while also securing 258 construction jobs and 11 permanent roles. Extensive community engagement has been a hallmark of the planning process, with over a year of interactions involving local residents through various events and workshops. The plan focuses on strengthening pedestrian connectivity, activating public spaces with new art and programming, and fostering small-scale retail to boost local foot traffic. Among the notable development projects is a mixed-use site on Warren Street in Roxbury, which will transform vacant land into 63 income-restricted homes and commercial space.

This project will also contribute to Boston’s bikeshare system, highlighting a commitment to sustainability with features like LEED Gold certification. The rezoning process will begin shortly, accompanied by community engagement events to gather input on future developments. Overall, these initiatives reflect Boston's dedication to creating resilient, affordable, and equitable neighborhoods.
