Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County awarded 1M for infrastructure in Everson
Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County recently received a significant $1 million grant to develop crucial below-ground infrastructure for the Mateo Meadows Community in Everson. This funding, sourced from the state’s Connecting Housing to Infrastructure Program, will facilitate the construction of essential sewer, storm, and water systems, along with a storm vault and utility trench. The upcoming Mateo Meadows Community is poised to be a mixed-use development featuring 30 townhomes and 14 apartments, addressing the need for affordable housing in the region. Construction on the initial four units commenced in fall 2024, marking a vital step toward enhancing local living conditions. The grant will enable Habitat for Humanity to support a larger number of low-income residents, particularly those earning between 30-50% of the area median income.
Executive Director John Moon highlighted the importance of this funding in expanding their service capacity. The initiative not only aims to provide housing but also seeks to create a vibrant community space near downtown Everson. Such projects underscore the commitment to addressing housing affordability and infrastructure needs within Whatcom County.
