City of Austin Winter Weather Operations Update and Closures
The City of Austin is taking proactive measures to address an impending winter storm by activating the Emergency Operations Center and coordinating a comprehensive response to protect residents. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, prompting the city to extend Cold Weather Shelter operations through January 22, allowing guests to stay throughout the day if needed. Mayor Kirk Watson and Travis County Judge Andy Brown discussed the city’s preparations during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of community safety. In addition to existing shelters, two new facilities will serve as Community Shelters for individuals and families at risk of power outages. CapMetro has adjusted its service schedule, advising residents to limit travel due to hazardous road conditions.
Austin Energy is monitoring the power grid for potential outages, while transportation crews are pre-treating roads to minimize risks. Community members are encouraged to stay updated through city alerts and social media platforms, ensuring they have access to critical information. The city urges residents to call 311 for assistance and to reserve 911 for emergencies only.
