New Scorecards Update Progress on Strategic Housing Blueprint Goals

Austin, TXLocal News

Austin continues to advance toward its 10-year housing objectives outlined in the Strategic Housing Blueprint, particularly in the construction of income-restricted housing and the preservation of existing affordable units. The recently released 2021 Blueprint Scorecard shows that the city has successfully exceeded its goal of building new housing units within a half-mile of Imagine Austin Centers and Corridors for the fourth consecutive year. However, the overall production of new affordable housing units has fallen slightly short of the target of 60,000 units. Notably, significant progress has been made in preserving affordable housing, with 1,550 units repaired and upgraded to remain affordable for low-income residents. Nora Linares-Moeller, Executive Director of HousingWorks Austin, expressed encouragement over the preservation of affordable units in light of the rising cost of living in the city.

Despite these achievements, city officials acknowledge that delays in new unit construction are anticipated due to the extensive time and resources required for such projects. Rosie Truelove, the Executive Director of the Housing and Planning Department, reiterated this understanding, highlighting the complexities involved in both rental and homeownership unit developments. The ongoing efforts reflect a strategic vision to align resources and foster partnerships aimed at addressing the housing shortage in Austin.
