City of Atlanta looks to ban smoke shops near schools
Atlanta City leaders are moving forward with a proposed ordinance that would ban vape and smoke shops from operating within 1,000 feet of elementary and secondary schools. This initiative is part of a broader effort to protect youth from the potential dangers associated with vaping, as studies indicate that e-cigarettes can contain harmful chemicals that affect developing lungs. Council member Liliana Bakhtiari, who authored the ordinance, stressed the need for increased restrictions to limit youth access to these products. Local business owners have voiced their support, noting that such regulations provide peace of mind for parents concerned about their children's exposure to tobacco products. In addition to the distance requirement from schools, the ordinance would prevent new vape shops from opening too close to existing ones, fostering more diverse commercial corridors.
Existing shops that fall within the proposed boundaries would be grandfathered in, allowing them to continue their operations without disruption. The ordinance will undergo committee consideration before being presented to Neighborhood Planning Units and ultimately the city council for a vote. If passed, this legislation could significantly alter the landscape of tobacco retail in Atlanta, prioritizing community health and safety.
