Judge appoints monitor to oversee agreement to reform Georgias Fulton County Jail
A federal judge has appointed Kathleen Kenney as the independent monitor for the Fulton County Jail reform initiative, following a U. S. Department of Justice investigation that uncovered critical issues related to inmate safety and living conditions. The investigation cited instances of violence, unsanitary conditions, and even the in-custody death of an inmate. Under the consent decree, Kenney will oversee compliance with the jail's reform requirements for an initial two-year period, delivering biannual public reports to ensure transparency and accountability.
With over 30 years of experience in corrections, including roles in Los Angeles County jails and the federal Bureau of Prisons, Kenney is well-equipped to address these substantial challenges. Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robb Pitts emphasized the importance of this appointment, stating it represents a significant step forward in improving jail conditions. The consent decree will remain in effect until the jail achieves compliance and maintains it for one year, highlighting the ongoing commitment to reform. This initiative reflects a broader concern for inmates' rights and the need for humane treatment within correctional facilities. The collaboration between the Justice Department, county officials, and the sheriff’s office marks a vital effort to ensure the safety and dignity of detainees.
