ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Water rescue crews across metro Atlanta are preparing ahead of the flood threat with Hurricane Helene. One of the big concerns is water on the roadways, which can cause cars to get stuck. Kyle Weber with the Marietta Fire Department said there are some safety tips to keep in mind if you find yourself in that situation. According to Weber, if you’re in a car surrounded by water, you want to avoid opening the car door and getting out.

Fire officials said inside the car is the safest place to be. Weber also advises drivers to roll down the window and immediately call 911 so rescue crews can find you. “If the water starts to rise above the vehicle and the vehicle remains submerged, you can climb onto the top roof of the vehicle, where we’ll be able to locate you,” he said. “Only in extreme situations, and only when that is your last option. ” While rescue crews are ready to respond to any emergency, they do remind drivers to “turn around, and don’t drown.
