IRS Extends Tax Filing Deadline for Georgians Affected by Hurricane Helene
Following the impact of Hurricane Helene in September, the IRS has announced a tax filing extension to May 1, 2025, for individuals and businesses affected by the disaster. This extension applies to those whose tax returns would normally be due during March or April 2025, as well as those with valid extensions for their 2023 returns. Notably, tax payments associated with 2023 returns due on April 15, 2024, are not included in this relief. The FEMA has declared all 159 counties in Georgia as disaster areas, though only 63 of these qualify for individual assistance. Taxpayers are eligible to claim casualty losses for various items, including homes, vehicles, and personal belongings that may not typically receive insurance coverage.
Additionally, all relief workers affiliated with recognized organizations may also be entitled to tax relief. The IRS will waive typical fees for copies of previous tax filings, and affected taxpayers should reference the FEMA declaration number on their forms. This proactive measure aims to ease the financial burden on those recovering from the hurricane, ensuring a smoother tax process.
