GULF SHORES, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - An Alabama family visiting a state park captured a special moment on camera: a mother alligator carrying three hatchlings on her back. Jimmy McCreless says he, his wife and his sister were riding bikes on trails at Gulf State Park when they spotted a large alligator near the edge of Lake Shelby, WBRC reports. “We are always on the lookout for any animals or wildlife,” McCreless said. “We went over little streams of water and came across her.

This is where they wait for their prey to come by. “ The area along Lake Shelby near the streams is secure with fencing. Those visiting the parks can enjoy the amenities and great outdoors safely away from wildlife. Many people don’t realize that alligators, despite being reptiles, are excellent mothers. “Female alligators fiercely protect their young from the time they lay eggs until the hatchlings are around 2 years old, guarding them from predators like raccoons, otters, birds and other alligators, as well as human threats,” said a spokesperson with the Alabama State Parks.

While baby alligators are still small, they will stay close to their mother and siblings. As they begin growing, baby gators will often bask in the sun on their mother’s back or head, enjoying her protection. Alabama State Parks says by the time the babies are about 3 years old, they’re big enough to pose a threat to younger hatchlings. At that point, the mother encourages them to find their own territory. Male alligators do not have much involvement in the care of the babies.

“In late spring, male alligators begin their mating ritual, announcing themselves with deep bellows and vibrations in the water. After mating, the male moves on, leaving the female to build the nest and care for the young,” an Alabama State Parks spokesperson said.
