On January 19, 2023, Don Milich, a competitive swimmer in his 60s, faced a life-threatening cardiac arrest during a practice session at Lifetime Fitness in Alpharetta, Georgia. Midway through practice, he felt unusually fatigued, describing the sensation as swimming with a "gorilla on my back. " When he collapsed, swim coach Boris Jerkovic reacted immediately, pulling him from the water and initiating CPR when he found no pulse or breathing. A defibrillator was quickly obtained, and thanks to the prompt and coordinated efforts of his coach and fellow swimmers, Milich was revived and transported to the hospital. Remarkably, he has since returned to the same pool, demonstrating his determination and the effectiveness of emergency response efforts.
This incident not only highlights the importance of quick action in life-threatening situations but also serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by athletes, regardless of age. Milich's story is one of survival, resilience, and the critical role of community support in emergencies. The experience has raised awareness about cardiac health and the need for preparedness in athletic environments.
