ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The father of the suspected shooter who allegedly killed four people and injured nine others at Apalachee High School has hired new representation after his public defender withdrew from the case. Colin Gray, 54, was charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter; two counts of second-degree murder; and eight counts of cruelty to children for allowing his son access to the gun used in the school shooting. The Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith said more charges are being considered. The motion to withdraw comes at Colin Gray’s request for private attorneys.

On Wednesday, attorneys for the elder Gray filed a motion to be separated from the other inmates in Barrow County custody, citing safety concerns. The case against Colin Gray is only the second time in U. S. history a juvenile’s parent has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting. On November 30, 2021, Ethan Robert Crumbley, 15, armed with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, killed four students and injured seven people, including a teacher.

A grand jury is expected to consider formal charges against both Grays on Oct. 17.
