ELEVATE: 50 Years of Culture is set to take place in Atlanta from September 20 to October 13, 2024, organized by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. The festival will kick off with a panel discussion led by cultural historian Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, featuring notable figures like former Mayor Shirley Franklin, who will discuss the origins of Atlanta's cultural scene. Family-friendly events, such as "A Day in the Park with the Arts," will offer interactive experiences for children, including performances by the Ailey Kids and Divinity Roxx. The festival will also showcase a cinematic journey at the Plaza Theatre, highlighting five decades of Atlanta cinema through various film presentations.
Additionally, the Steele Bridge will host an art installation featuring reproductions from Atlanta's permanent collection, providing networking opportunities for local artists. A mural unveiling by artist Chinemerem Omeh will take place at Underground Atlanta, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the city. This initiative not only celebrates the past but also aims to engage the community in ongoing cultural discussions and artistic expressions. ELEVATE promises to be a vibrant celebration of Atlanta's rich artistic heritage and community spirit.
