Return to school plan released for Apalachee High School families following mass shooting

Atlanta, GALocal News

Apalachee High School is preparing to reopen on September 23 after a mass shooting that resulted in the tragic loss of two teachers and two students. The Barrow County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Dallas LeDuff, confirmed that the district is working closely with the community, educators, and mental health experts to facilitate a safe and supportive return for students. The reopening plan includes relocating some classrooms as a measure to address the trauma associated with the incident. Lisa Morgan, representing the Georgia Association of Educators, emphasized the critical need to focus on the emotional well-being of students and staff during this time.

Enhanced security measures will be implemented, including more police patrols on campus and possibly limiting visitor access. The shooting highlighted significant security gaps, as the shooter was able to bring a concealed weapon onto a school bus without detection. The district is exploring further security enhancements in collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The community's support and the focus on healing and security will be vital as students prepare to return to school.
